Q & A with Jack Slovick
How did you get started?
I worked full time for 20+ years and purposely took jobs in different departments to build up my knowledge. I worked in everything from quality control, quality management systems, and regulatory positions for a long time, and then my last full time job was in clinical affairs. They were all distinctly separate entities. I worked as a manager and also worked under others, trying to get as much hands-on learning as I possibly could. Once I felt I had enough experience in all those areas, I decided to start a consulting firm.
What do you like most about your work?
I love the variety and different modalities. I see everything from wound care products, to cosmetic skin tone devices, to catheters of all kinds. The sheer variety that I run across is pretty extreme.
What’s the most interesting device you’ve worked with?
That’s a tough one to narrow down. In terms of the sophistication there was a device that treated atrial fibrillation of the heart. It targeted specific legions on the heart and would prevent an attack from happening, so that was pretty interesting. A stroke catheter was interesting too – it treated aneurysms. But really, I like variety so they all make my job challenging in the best ways.
Do you feel part of the team when you see the company get approved?
For sure. I just hired a guy from Medtronic that handled program management there and he was telling me that 1 in 100 start ups find success with their product. But from my perspective and the movement of companies we’ve worked with, it feels like 100 in 100 start ups reach their goals and more. Some of the companies I’ve worked with have gone on to sell to major corporations like Baxter and Medtronic. I’ve witnessed tremendous success and it’s inspiring.
How do you go about choosing the consultants that you hire?
Excellence. Through my travels and doing this for 40 years, I’ve been exposed to a lot of different companies. I’ve also audited over 200 companies. If I run into somebody and they impress me, I’ll hang on to that name and eventually I can find work for them.
How’s your track record with companies?
If you sign up with Methodize, you’re going to get approved. Whether you’re looking for a CE Mark, ISO 13485 certificate, FDA approval, we’ve got a great track record of getting companies over the line.
